Walking across the border and renting a car in Tijuana?

I am considering a trip to Rosarito and for several reasons I did not want to drive my car across the border. I have been considering just driving it to the border, walking across and renting a car in TJ to continue on to Rosarito. Is this a terrible idea? I was hoping there would be some sort of car rental place close to the border but everything I see is near the airport. Has anybody done this?

You can probably get a shuttle bus right at the border to take you to the airport to get a rental car, or they may even bring the rental car to you at the border, something you could definitely talk to the car rental company about before you go. Most car rental places are at/near the airports in MX. Sounds like a good plan to me though! Have a fun trip!

You will need a passport to get an FMM to travel beyond the border zone (May 1st 2010)

Look, nothing will happen if you bring your car across the border. I am a US citizen and live in Tijuana since 2002. The only delay is crossing back to the US, but if you do it early on the weekends you’ll be fine.
But, if you want to rent a car, just take the 905 freeway east and it will take you straight to the otay border crossing. You can find out the rest in yahoo maps, they already have maps of TJ.
You can stop to eat and the many fine restaurants in Tijuana, before you head down to rosarito.
