As soon as you have an address, depending on which neighborhood you're in, you can probably apply for a "resident-parking"-card... You pay a certain amount of money every month or every year, and you won't have to pay for parking "at home" anymore, other than that fixed fee of course... Other than that... No, parking in Amsterdam is just VERY expensive and it's not something that's a problem just for you. I suggest contacting the city of Amsterdam parking department as soon as you get an address, or selling your car and buying a bicycle as soon as you arrive...

You could of course try to find a free parking space somewhere, but if your car is not very new and you leave it there, there's a chance they will tow it away, if they think it might be an abandoned wreck. No offense, I don't know what kind of car you have... If it IS new, then prepare for it not having a radio anymore the next time you visit it...
References :
It depends in which neighborhood you will live, several parts of town are free parking, other parts are indeed very expensive. If you live in the south part, it is expensive too, but some parts there are free, so maybe you need to walk to your car for 10 minutes to the free parking zone.
References :
Are you out of your mind????!!!! Don't buy a car if you live in a Dutch city, not only will you be crippled with parking costs, you'll also have to pay huge motor tax costs!!!!

If you must use a car in NL, contact the Dutch equivalent of the AA which is known as the Wegenwacht and ask them about their car leasing options, they will deliver a car to you on the days you need one, you just pay for a certain number of kilometres per year. This is much cheaper for city dwellers!

Otherwise, use the public transport system, it's excellent in and close to the cities. Cars are good if you have to go to places with bad public transport connections.
References :
I lived in the Netherlands for 6 years.
