How much credit to I need to have my credit card to rent a car?

I have a rental with Hertz in a few days. I need to know how much available credit I need on my card. My rental is $83.

Call them up and ask them.
It should not be more than a $500 hold.
Remember you can overpay your card to increase your credit limit.
Example current limit $300, make a payment of $500 get a $800 instant credit limit.

    It depends…

When I use my American Express, they USUALLY do not put a hold on it, but one time I know of they put a $1,500.00 hold on it.

Typically, they will put at least a $500 hold on it…. if it is a debit card, they might put even more though.

As long as you have $500 available credit, you will most likely be OK.

As for making overpayments on your card… some banks don’t let you do that anymore because of the Patriot Act, Banking rules, and Antiterrorism laws… the banks that do allow you to make an overpayment require it to be in the form of a check. (You can’t make an overpayment online)
