My 19-year old niece had her car stolen and I am trying to help her rent a car to get to work in Sacramento, CA, but no rental car company will rent to her because she is 19 (even if I rent it myself, they won’t let her drive because she is not 21). Any ideas out there? I’ve tried all the big guys – Avis, Hertz, Enterprise, Alamo, Dollar… heck, even a place called Rent-a-Wreck! They all say no dice. Please help. Thanks.

Yeah you can get a car if you are under 21 years old.

The normal rental age is 25, so you’re lucky they’re only saying 21. Hopefully she had insurance and they are required by law to provide a rental. OK course they usually meet this obligation by saying call Hertz. If not, call your insurance and explain the problem and maybe they can help.
Good Luck!

Your only possible source would be a small, local company. Some will rent to someone under 25, and allow a driver under 21. You will not know until you call every rental agency in the yellow pages.
You could always drive the rental yourself and let her drive your car for a few days…

Go to Avis, Eterprise, Hertz.com. Read the rules and regulations. That should give you a good idea. Or call them.

I’m pretty sure it’s actually 25. Not 21. Sorry.

enterprise will let you. you just have to have a check stub and a utility bill and full coverage insurance. My husband and I did it and my husband is 24 and I am 22.

In California, if you are under 21, it will be very difficult. This is a high accident prone area. I came out here at the age of 23 and found it hard to rent a car. I do not believe she will be able to rent a car. 25 is the age you can rent without penalties, under that it’s hit or miss.
I rented from Hertz, but had to pull teeth in order to do it. Make sure you are calling the companies. The online forms won’t help you much. Also call the rental places that are not located at the airports. They are usually more forgiving on age.
I would think the insurance company would give you a rental for a period i of time at a price. Check with them too.

some rental companies let u use your own insurance policy that u have on your own cars. if you call your insurance company and tell them that u are renting a vehicle the will let you use your policy on the rental. if she is put on your car insurance or already is then she can drive the rental. just don’t tell them, they don’t need to know who is driving at this point. there a bunch of cry babies, and just push more experienced drivers to drive their cars. if you have your car insurance policy it will be perfectly legal. if she gets pulled over or in an accident with the rental she will be covered by that policy

Dollar Rent-A-Car rent vehicles under the age of 21 under certain conditions: 1)You have to pay under age fees which range from $50-$100 per rent day 2) She can not use her current auto insurance, she has to purchase their car rental insurance which again ranges from $30 to $75 per rent day. Now, only certain Dollar rent-a-car offices does this, I would suggest to make a couple of phone calls around town and avoid the airport office because they will charge you extra, like the airport car rental fee. Hope this helps! Good luck!!!
