If they don’t ask, bring it up. (Which means you need to have a space dedicated to this job – no shared space with your family.) Same goes for how you will be focusing, uninterrupted, from home on the job. I am planning to take a trip to Hot Springs, Arkansas. It is about 500 miles from my home, plus we will do sight seeing. I have Chevrolet Traverse. The MPG indicator shows that I am getting 18 miles per gallon, but it seems like it wants to stop at every station. I can get a discount to rent a car for around 115.00. Would I save enough on gas to pay for the rental?

Not on a 500 miles trip. Many car rentals have a limit on the mileage you can put on them. If you go over, they charge you by the mile. You also have to tell them if you plan on taking it out of state, which might raise the rate. That rate may not include taxes which are significant.

Your insurance may not adequately cover the rental car. Buying the rental insurance will raise that rate significantly.

1200 miles at 18 mpg will cost you 266 dollars at 4 bucks a gallon.
1200 miles at 32 mpg will cost you 150 dollars at 4 bucks a gallon.
You will save 116 dollars at 4 bucks a gallon.

Yes, renting a car in Minneapolis is the best way. There is an historic hotel in downtown Red Wind called the St. James. It is really beautiful and has a restaurant inside. Walk down to the river and enjoy the scenery in the park. There is also a small local art gallery inside the train station. All within a couple of blocks of the hotel.

We use our personal car a lot for business travel but aren’t so good at keeping track of the miles we do for business and those we do for running our own personal errands. If say, we had to go to LA for business reasons would it be smart to rent a car from Hertz or something and then call the whole thing a business expense? Does that work?

I would have a hard time believing that car rental expenses were "ordinary" and "necessary" for your business if you’re already using a personal vehicle for other business.

Besides, its foolish to spend extra money just to get a tax deduction. Spend a dollar to save 25 cents? no thank you.

The best bet is to take the cheapest travel option and keep the necessary records to make sure you can deduct the expense.

It would only be for 2 days and it wouldn’t have to be an extravagant car or anything. My boyfriend is going to be flying from Arkansas to North Carolina. It would be easier for him to fly than to drive, and I don’t have transportation right now to pick him up. Would it be cheaper to rent from the airport or from a rental lot?

It probably would be cheaper to rent it from an off-airport location, since there is always an extra fee that goes to the airport authority for rentals that are either on airport property or at a consolidated rental facility that runs shuttles to and from the airport. Phone one or two to find out how the cost compares between on- and off-site.
