Enterprise Rent-A-Car Co. known for its 51-year history of never laying off a U.S. employee, said it would dismiss 1,000 of its 75,000 employees, as Americans lessened the amount of time spent driving and flying.
Enterprise’s vice president of corporate responsibility, Patrick Farrell said “These types of declines are unprecedented,” noting that not only does these job cuts further demonstrate the current economic downturn, but continue to erode workplace norms that once protected many U.S. workers from permanent job loss.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employment in the car rental and leasing sector fell 3.3% in October from a year earlier.

I work for one of the ‘big 4′ car rental companies in Australia, we have had visits from the US head office to cull employees here.
We have had a downturn that hasn’t been seen for many years here in Oz…….but we were still turning profit, which prompted our US counterparts to stick their hand in all the international offices’ that were making money and use their profits to bail out the US operations.
