We looked at the major chains, and then went to Priceline, and hotwire, and the rates from the ‘discount’ sites were the same as if we went directly to the chain. It doesn’t make sense

I think it also depends on which city you are!

We are going to San Fran for spring break in two days and we have a hotel already booked but I wanted to know what sorta car we should rent that would be conducive to that’s city and easy to drive around. I’ve read that streets can be narrow, however sometimes you have to drive awhile to see various valleys and areas of the region. I’m limited to Hertz rent-a-car because of my fathers discount card and limited to airport pickup and drop off. I’m been put in charge of the car but none of us really know what is a good one.
The four cars we can rent are as follows:
Volvo V70
Saturn Vue
Jeep Wrangler
Altima and Camry Hybrids (it gives you both of these during the selection so I’m guessing they are similar.)
Thank you ahead of time.
Jonas
My advice to visitors is to not rent a car at all while in the city. You will have to pay to park it, hotel parking starts at about $30 per day even with in out privileges and you will have to pay to park where ever you go in The City. In addition to the hills, narrow streets and bad traffic the one way and sometimes curvy streets can be intimidating to non residents.
If you want to get out of the city to go to the wine country, yosemite, or Monterey rent a car for the day or two that you plan to travel outside the immediate bay area. I would advise against renting a Jeep Wrangler, SUV’s are harder to drive safely in a city like SF and are even more difficult to park due to the bad sight lines.
San Francisco is very compact and has a good public transportation system. Most everything can be reached by bus, trolley, light rail or a combo of these. The downtown neighborhoods [Union Square, Chinatown, North Beach and Fisherman's Wharf] are within easy walking distance and walking is the best way to see any city.
Chances are good that you and your friends are not always going to want to do the same things at the same times and so you may want to explore separately anyway.
My advice would be purchase multi day Muni passes which are a real deal and give access to buses, trolley, light rail and the cable cars. If you are out late or don’t want to wait on a bus then use a cab it will still be cheaper per day than car rental and parking.
