I’ve been researching and it seems best not to have a car while staying in Boston. I am flying into Manchester and the only need for a car is to get down. Is there a cheaper, easier way to get to Boston without renting a car?
YOu could take the bus. simple and cheap if youhave a couple hours to spare.

The van shuttle Penny Lee refers to connects with the Boston public transportation system ("The T") at two station locations: Woburn/Anderson (Purple Line commuter trains to Boston’s North Station) and Sullivan Square (Orange Line subway). The scheduled time to Woburn/Anderson is 1hr5min; to Sullivan 1hr25min. Fare is $ 29, not including tip.
You are right that it is best not to rent a car.

1. From Boston Logan airport, take a bus (silver line SL1) from the terminals to stop at South station. Take a short walk to Red line subway, go upward for 1 stop to reach Downtown Crossing station.
This route costs $1.70 (Charlie Card) or $2.00 (Charlie Ticket).
2. From airport, take the Airport Shuttle which stops at Blue line subway. Then take Blue line inbound to State station, change to Orange line downward for 1 stop to reach Downtown Crossing.
This route costs $3.40 (Charlie Card) or $4.00 (Charlie Ticket).
